Diego Negri and Sergio Lambertenghi dominated the 28th edition of Coppa Tito Nordio, held in Trieste during two spring days characterized by uncertain weather conditions, which nothwithstanding allowed to perform five races.
On saturday two races were done, with very light wind, that died almost completely at the end of the first race, which was shortened at the end of the second windward leg. This race was won like all the others by the Fiamme Gialle crew; second were the Swedish Lofstedt-Sundman, followed at third palce by Pipan-Bonmarco of the Società Triestina della Vela. Franco de Denaro, who fights on the race field since more than sixty years, performed very well with his crew Gabriele de Amngelis scoring a fourth place. In the second race the Austrian Nehammer- Fischer followed the winners, and the former Cup winner Danelon-Ulcigrai of Yacht Club Adriaco were third. In the evening a dinner-buffet was offered by the Yacht Club Adriaco, where a wine tasting of typical local products took place. During the dinner there was the chance of watching the pictures and the movie of the day.
On sunday morning the race committee decided to put the race field more far from the coast. The wind was light at first, then blowed stronger from SW ("libeccio"), up to 14-15 knots during the third race, where the sunshine finally appeared. The strong Austrians Nehammer-Fischer kept constanly the second position behind Negri-Lambertenghi, while the third position was conquered by Falciola-Paloschi (LNI Mandello Lario). With their partial scoring 6-3-3 they took the position that was of Danelon-Ulcigrai, that at the end with 4-5-6 finished in fourth position. The mixed crew formed by Heimo and Hermine Schlagbauer performed very well with a very regular series of results and finished fifth.
The poor participation of italian sailors at the regatta is the only negative point of an event very well organized, with expertise and expenditure of money and means. Five boats coming from out of Trieste are too few for a Coppa Italia regatta. This was due perhaps to the economic crisis and to the crisis of the italian Starclass, but overall the cause was the unlucky overlap with some local races, that have been organized without paying attention to the Coppa Italia calendar.
